Slowly snapping away and mainly using Snapchat cause of the cool filters. The cat is one of my favourites.
One of my possible subjects for Project 2 for Photography & Social Media is my local area and local landmarks so I decided to do some research into landmark photography.
This article made me think about working in some close up/detail images like this one of the Sydney Opera House
You can still tell what it is and it’s not your usual landmark photo.
‘Beyond the Postcard – 14 Tips for Creating Unique Photographs in Iconic Locations’ is a really interesting read, and I picked up some ideas that could make my shots more interesting – looking at shooting from new angles, looking at different lighting, using special effects, playing with focal lengths and depth of field.
and then I had a look online to see what other type of shots people are taking for some inspiration….
I love this idea of the Time Sliced project. Such a cool way to showcase a landmark.
Another cool idea. Taking a shot of a landmark but from a different perspective.
And finally the Souvenir series where the photographer holds postcards/souvenirs in front of landmarks.
I’ve been having a play with one of my possible ideas for Project 2 – food.
I’ve gone with a photographic story approach for this series of shots. Square shots as I’m thinking I’ll share this on Instagram. Minimal editing.
Making Chocolate Raspberry Brownies
A photographic theme is a series of images that are related in some way.
A photographic story may be:
- a series of images that tells a story
- a sequential or chronological series of images (eg - "a day in the life of your city".)
- sequential or time based
- a series of images that has some kind of narrative structure (eg - beginning, middle and end).
For Project 2 I’m learning towards doing a photographic theme more than a photographic story. I feel more of my image taking tends to be thematic unless I am specifically shooting an event (eg a party) or I am doing Ali Edwards’ Day in the Life or Week in the Life. For me a theme can be less constraining than restricting myself to photos that just tell a story.
That said I think I might have a play with a few photographic stories just for fun. And of course – I’ll share them here.
So I thought I’d look at some inspiration for each of my theme ideas to see if any spark what I want to do for my second project.
I thought I’d look at food photography first.
Some great foodie shots:

So many ideas running around for my project 2 but I have narrowed it down to 3 options
So here are my options, the possible audience and method of sharing.
Food (made using Your Inspiration At Home products). Customers and those interested in Your Inspiration at Home. Shared on my YIAH Instagram account
My local community. Tourists, family overseas, anyone interested in history/buildings. Shared in my Flickr gallery.
Beach life. Anyone (not really sure). Shared in my Flickr gallery.
I’m not really enjoying this and some days I’m very much can’t be bothered but I’m still plugging away. Here for your viewing pleasure is my first seven days of selfies
Am loving playing with the various snapchat filters each day as are the girls.
Project focus – images of myself as a photographer
Why I chose this focus? Photography is such a big part of my life from when I was young. It’s also part of my job as a web designer and I wanted a professional image I could use as part of my online branding.
Image One
I picked this image as it shows me out shooting and doing something I love. I’m hoping it shows possible future clients that I’m happy to get into the action and will do what I can to get them some great images. I’ve gone black and white as I feel it shows the essence of the image, me as a photographer, without the distraction of the background colours
Image Two
I felt that it could be good to have a basic headshot of myself I can use on social media. I picked this image as I like the lighting and the plain background. I struggled picking a headshot of myself as I don’t often take pictures of myself.
Image Three
I picked this image after a few similar images online taken by other photographers. I feel it can be used as an alternate social media image. I’m currently using a similar image on my photography blog but will change it to this as I much prefer the classic look of black and white.
You can check out part one of the challenge here.
Challenge 4 – clear the clutter (portrait)
Challenge 5 – Black & white
Challenge 6 –The ‘Look Down’ shot
Challenge 7 – Shapes and lines
Working towards picking my three images to use for Project 1.
Here's some of the test images I'm thinking I might use, a bunch of test selfies
